Tips on Hair Highlight and Lowlights for the Ultimate Look

If you have longed for the sun kissed look of hair highlights but was not sure how to go about getting hair highlights that look natural, here are some tips that will help you. First of all, there are both hair highlight and hair lowlights. Highlights are achieved by adding lighter streaks to your hair; lowlights are achieved by adding darker streaks to your hair. Of course, the sun only adds natural highlights, by bleaching out select strands of hair during the summer months. If you want to achieve a natural look, then consider highlighting your hair only one or two shades lighter. For a drastic and dramatic look, you can add hair highlight up to four or more shades lighter. Many hair stylists prefer to add both hair highlights and lowlights for the ultimate natural look.

Bleach
Most hair highlights are achieved by using bleach. There are many “do it yourself kits” that contain a cap and allow you to pull sections of your hair through holes in the cap, and then brush the bleach mixture onto the strands. This unfortunately has led to many hair highlight disasters. For the best look, you should trust professionals who can see where they are applying the bleach to your hair. Unfortunately, one spot of bleach on an unwanted strand of hair will leave its mark. If you can not tell where you are applying the bleach, you are mixing a recipe for disaster.

The Foil Method
Professional hair stylists rarely (if ever) use the cap method when it comes to hair and highlights. The method used today is “the foil hair highlight method”. This consists of using a sheet of foil, then brushing the bleach on a strand of hair that is resting on the foil, then folding the piece of foil over and sealing it shut. This is the preferred method of giving hair highlights and allows the hair stylist to have full control over where the highlights are placed.
