The latest hairstyles
almost always seem to be inspired by the famous actresses in the movies, famous singers or the ‘it” girl celebrities around town. Good examples are the craze for red hair that came out after Julia Roberts starred in Pretty Women, the passion for pixie cuts that came after Edie Sedgwick’s appearance in Andy Warhol films and the rage for twenties haircuts after Mia Farrow wore one in the Great Gatsby. Speaking of Mia Farrow she also caused a passion for pixie cuts after she starred in Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby in the early sixties.
Some celebrity hairstyles that are still around in 1996 never seem to go away. A good example is the “Rachel” first worn by Jennifer Aniston well over a decade ago. It is still a much-requested hairstyle in beauty salons.
One person that has greatly influenced the way hair looks in general is Paris Hilton. Along with her sometimes pal Nicole Richie the two girls have created a craze for long straight hair. The idea is to look like Susan Dey from the Partridge Family or like one of Jacqueline Suzanne’s characters in her best selling movie Valley of the Dolls. The way to get this perfectly straight hair is to straighten with a tourmaline flat iron such as the one made by Sedu. One person who is a master at wearing straight hair is Gwyneth Paltrow.
For a while both girls were teasing their hair at the top so it looks like a puff and wrapping psychedelic scarves around their heads. Sometimes they also hot roll the ends so that they curve up, much in the way that you might you might have seen on Samantha Eggar (the star of television’s Bewitched.)
Gwen Stefani is a singer and clothing designer whose platinum locks have not only recreated an interest in retro styles but also in looks that have not been seen being seriously since the 1940s. These latest hairstyles include circles of braids at the top of the head, Veronica lake type side swept bangs and buns on either side of the head. Yet another celebrity who likes to wear her hair in a retro style is Christina Aguilera who also has hair bleached very white.
The long tousled hippie hair that was so popular in the sixties is also back. This hairstyle influenced millions of teens when it was adopted by Marie Kate and Ashley Olsen. Yet another very famous star that is famous for adopting this tousled look is Lindsay Lohan. Older celebrities that still wear their hair like this include Michelle Pfeiffer and Patricia Arquette.
Given the recent release of the movie “Marie Antoinette” it would not be surprising if highly elegant hairdos such as the one worn by Kirsten Dunst in the movie suddenly became the latest hairstyles.
